It is 25 years since Casa Velha do Palheiro originally opened it’s doors. This Relais & Châteaux 5 star property is integrated into the Palheiro Nature Estate which dates back to 1801.
To commemorate the 25 year celebration the main house has been completely renovated with a design overhaul that manages to maintain the country house spirit yet gives the rooms a classic contemporary feel with all the facilities that the modern traveller now expects.
The architect James Ward of James Ward Architects who were responsible for the project explains:
Casa Velha do Palheiro presented us with one of the most challenging commissions for any designer; one that demanded respect for its history and its architecture whilst providing guests with the facilities they expect to find in a classic 5-star hotel. New bathrooms with walk-in showers and freestanding bathtubs in the suites, calacatta marble tile finishes and new lighting. Each room has its own unique fabric selection combined with warm ‘country house’ heritage wall colours, new carpets and curtains, back lit headboards and ceiling mood lighting to accentuate Casa Velha’s restored antique furniture.
Andreia Sousa Pinto, decorator for the project states:
The interiors are a harmony of predominate greens, calming natural tones and the colour nuances are a journey through the estate.
The family history with its English style lends a romantic and classic character to these rooms full of tradition and exclusivity.
The board of directors of Casa Velha do Palheiro and part of the 5th generation involved in this family enterprise explain:
We are delighted with the final result of this major renovation, and we must congratulate our builder Construteam as well as James Ward and his team of Mary Caldeira and Andreia Sousa Pinto. They have managed to create a contemporary classic look and feel that we are confident will delight the most discerning modern traveller.
Other changes include an exciting range of new menus and flavours throughout the resort’s three dining areas, created by new head chef Gonçalo Bita Bota.
The chapel in the world-famous Palheiro Gardens has now been renovated ahead of the autumn weddings.
Jonathan Fletcher, president of Palheiro Nature Estate, said:
Palheiro Nature Estate is a resort that is synonymous with quality and is renowned for the experience that we provide, both in Madeira and beyond. We are extremely proud of the reputation that we have built, and this latest program of investment will allow us to continue to move forward and evolve so that we maintain our position at the forefront of golf and hospitality on the island.
