Gastronomy at the Vista Balancal Restaurant combines local culinary tastes with a southern European flavour. Influenced by the Atlantic and inspired by the Mediterranean – with a dash of the oriental adding a little spice – the cuisine serves to illustrate the imagination and creativity associated with the award-winning kitchen.
The dining room at Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro overlooks the landscaped grounds and manicured lawn at the rear of the five-star property. Decorated in restful shades of peach and designed to embody the style and comfort of country living, the Casa Velha dining room reflects the classical elegance associated with the hotel.
The Casa de Chá, or Tea House, enjoys a privileged position in Palheiro Gardens, right next to Palheiro Golf and Casa Velha do Palheiro country house hotel. From tables set within the building and those on the terrace, guests are afforded pleasant views of the hotel gardens and the golf course.
Within the 150 hectare Palheiro Estate we have created nature trails for your pleasure. These can be enjoyed on bikes, for running, hiking or just a simple stroll in nature. We please ask you to respect others’ enjoyment of the Estate and to be quiet near the golfers.
Explore the beauty of the 150-hectare Palheiro Nature Estate on our scenic trail linking Casa Velha do Palheiro to the Palheiro Golf Clubhouse and Vista Balancal Restaurant.
Starting near the Tea House, the route follows a peaceful forest path, passing the horse stables and offering stunning views over Palheiro Golf and the Bay of Funchal. Perfect for a gentle walk, a jog, or a quiet moment in nature, this easy trail invites you to experience the Estate’s serene landscapes at your own pace.
As you walk, you’ll pass through areas that are part of our reforestation programme, restoring Madeira’s native woodland with species such as Til (Ocotea foetens), Barbusano (Apollonias barbujana), and Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis). This ongoing effort follows the 2012 fires and aims to replace invasive trees with the island’s original flora.
Along the way, you’ll discover changing scenery — from shaded forest sections filled with birdsong to open stretches revealing panoramic views of the mountains and the ocean. The tranquil atmosphere makes this trail a perfect opportunity to slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the quiet charm of Palheiro.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including the rare Trocaz Pigeon (Columba trocaz) and the Eurasian Sparrowhawk of Macaronesia (Accipiter nisus granti).
The trail ends at the Palheiro Golf Clubhouse, where you can relax with a drink and enjoy the spectacular views and sunsets over Funchal Bay.
Please be considerate of golfers by keeping quiet near the course and respecting others’ enjoyment of the Estate.
Guests are invited to join our weekly guided Nature Trail walk, held every Friday at 10:30, following the scenic route between Casa Velha do Palheiro and the Palheiro Golf Clubhouse.
Led at a gentle pace, this guided experience offers a deeper appreciation of the Estate’s landscapes, reforestation efforts, and native flora and fauna, with time to pause, observe, and enjoy the tranquillity of Palheiro Nature Estate.
